"Aylburton Memorial Hall (Public)"
Aylburton used the commemoration of Great War casualties to build for its future. The Aylburton Memorial Hall was constructed in 1919, like many public buildings in the Forest of Dean and its immediate surroundings,
The Village Hall features a Memorial Garden (reduced in size after the A48, High Street, was widened) with two engraved tablets remembering the War Dead from the Great War and the Second World War.
The Parish Council and Memorial Hall organise a poppy wreath laying ceremony on the 11 November each year. The WI decorate the Cross opposite.
The Memorial Garden, tablets of commemoration and Flag Staff are maintained and run by the Memorial Hall. No public funds are used for this purpose.
The wrought iron gates commemorating the 1939-1945 conflict have now been restored by a local business. (Road Wash from traffic disturbing standing water flooding down from Chapel Hill had rotted out the lower sections. The Flower and Vegetable Show funded a £1000 grant for this purpose, with the remainder will be funded by the Hall.) The restored and strengthened gates were reinstalled in February 2025, ready for the 80th Anniversary of VE and VJ Days. Pictures to follow.
Normally a Union Flag is flown from the Memorial Hall, its position reflecting HM government advice depending on events.
The trustees will consider requests to fly other flags for events if so requested, noting the Memorial Hall tries to be strictly apolitical.
